Rider / Student Tracking RFID – Bring Your Own Card!

4 June, 2025 |

BusWhere has supported RFID readers on the bus for several years now. Students (or shuttle riders) can be given a blue RFID tag which they use to swipe on & off the bus. We track who swiped on/off, when, and where the swipe happened, and it gets included with all logs and reports.

When used in a school setting, the RFID tags are useful in that they don’t have any identifying information about the student, they are inexpensive and easy to replace, and they can be managed by the parents directly by grabbing a new one and associating the printed ID on the back of the tag with their child. As the child gets on/off the bus, the parent gets a notification to their phone and can see whether the child is currently on or off the bus.

We are proud to announce support for a wide variety of RFID-enabled chips, tags, and cards. With our new Universal RFID Reader, if riders on the bus already have an RFID-enabled card or tag (for example to swipe in & out of a building, get school lunch, etc.), they can use that same ID to swipe on & off the bus and be tracked through BusWhere. This reduces the number of tags your riders have to carry around and provides unified tracking and reporting as riders go from the bus to the building and to other “swipe-enabled” areas of your school or organization.
